  • Former Crossley Heath student Andy opens gym and wellness centre

Former student Andy has successfully opened and grown his own gym and wellness centre, following a 40-year career in the automotive industry that saw him rise from apprentice mechanic to Sales Director.

Andy, who attended our predecessor school, Crossley and Porter, remembers his time here as “a really enjoyable time… a great school with good teachers.” He particularly enjoyed maths and sport, and recalls his first form tutor, Mr Lawford, as a memorable influence. “He was a real character, with his stories of Geoffrey Boycott and others” Andy said.

After leaving school, Andy began his career as an apprentice mechanic at a local Volvo dealership. While he enjoyed the role, he soon realised he wanted to explore other opportunities within the automotive sector. After gaining his driving licence, he secured a junior position at Trinity Garage, supporting the sales team. His willingness to learn and strong work ethic quickly paid off, and within six months he was promoted to Sales Executive.

Andy’s career progressed rapidly. Within six years he had become a Sales Manager, and by the age of 27 he was running his own dealership. He went on to manage several large dealerships before moving into national roles supporting automotive finance and insurance businesses, working with major manufacturers including BMW, Peugeot and Citroën.

He later joined BMW UK, working closely with dealership networks to improve performance and customer retention, before moving into the automotive software sector.

Reflecting on his career, Andy said, “I’ve enjoyed meeting some great people over the years. Although the industry is massive, the good people tend to cross paths again and again.”

After a successful 40-year career in the automotive industry, Andy made the decision to pursue a completely new direction, turning his focus to health and wellbeing. Becoming co-owner of Valley Fit Gym and Valley Wellness Centre marked a significant career change and a bold step into entrepreneurship. Andy said the opportunity arose through a conversation with his now business partner. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial side and enjoy building something. It’s been exciting to grow the business and help people improve their health and wellbeing.”

What began as a small gym with around 50 members has since grown into a thriving business supporting over 1,200 members, alongside the opening of a dedicated wellness centre. Andy’s transition demonstrates that it is never too late to change direction, pursue new passions, and apply the skills gained throughout a career in new and meaningful ways.

Reflecting on the move, Andy said he has always had an entrepreneurial mindset and enjoys building businesses and helping others. His success in growing the wellness centre is a testament to the value of courage, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.

His advice to current Crossley Heath students is to remain open to opportunities. “You never know where a career path will take you. Take learnings from everything and everyone you meet, and build your skills along the way.”
