  • Alumni Spotlight: Sam Barrott

We were delighted to welcome former Crossley Heath student Sam Barrott back to school to speak to our Sixth Form students about his career as a FIFA Premier League referee and his journey from the classroom to the football pitch.

Sam studied at Crossley Heath, leaving us in 2009, and initially went on to become a teacher before taking a different direction and pursuing a career in professional refereeing, combining his love of sport with a profession that has taken him to some incredible places.

During his talk, Sam gave our students a fascinating insight into what life as a Premier League referee is really like. He spoke honestly about both the highs and the lows of the profession. The highlights include travelling to some amazing places, experiencing elite football first-hand and meeting and getting to know some of the most recognisable players in the game.

But Sam was equally open about the challenges that come with the role. Referees operate under intense scrutiny, and decisions can quickly attract criticism from players, managers and supporters. Sam spoke about the importance of being able to deal with that pressure, learn from mistakes and maintain confidence in your own decision-making.

He also gave students a real insight into just how demanding the preparation behind a Premier League match can be. His weekly schedule is far more than simply turning up on match day. From gym sessions and running, to reviewing previous matches and analysing his own performance in minute detail, Sam's preparation also includes coaching sessions, studying the teams he is due to referee and reviewing their previous games to understand their likely tactics, as well as extensive travel.

It was a great opportunity for our students to hear about the skills and qualities needed to succeed at the highest level, including resilience, discipline, attention to detail, decision-making and the ability to continually reflect and improve.

Sam also shared his thoughts on the future of refereeing and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on both the profession and football more widely. He discussed some of the exciting possibilities, but also the current limitations of AI when it comes to understanding the nuances, context and unpredictability of a live football match.

For our students, it was a brilliant opportunity to hear first-hand what it takes to build a career around your passion, while also getting an honest insight into the realities that come with working at the very highest level.

A huge thank you to Sam for taking the time to return to Crossley Heath and share his experiences with our students. It was fantastic to welcome him back, and we hope to see him back on the Crossley Heath sidelines again in the future!
