Crossley Heath Alumnus Umpires at the World Championships Final

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Crossley Heath alumnus Joshua Reynolds, who recently officiated at the World Table Tennis Championships Final, one of the sport’s biggest international stages.

Joshua’s remarkable journey in table tennis officiating has taken him around the world, culminating in the honour of umpiring at the highest level of the game. His story was recently featured by Table Tennis England, highlighting both his professional achievements and his inspiring journey through the sport.

Over the course of the tournament, he took charge of 11 matches, including high-pressure fixtures involving some of the world’s top table tennis nations such as China, Japan, Sweden and France. He also umpired the Women’s Team Final between China and Japan in front of a packed crowd at Wembley.

Reflecting on the atmosphere of the championships, Joshua described it as unlike anything he had experienced before:

“The atmosphere was something I’d never experienced before, a full capacity crowd screaming on every point. You could feel the noise level increasing every time it got tight, so it was a case of trying to keep your composure and concentration at the same time as hearing it all to make sure you didn’t miss anything.”

Alongside his international umpiring career, Joshua also works full-time as a Financial Controller, balancing both roles with dedication and professionalism.

Reflecting on the skills needed to succeed as an umpire, Joshua said:

“The ability to be impartial and respect other people's viewpoints even if they are not aligned with your own. Whilst being an umpire, I also have a full time job as a Financial Controller so being able to multitask and juggle these abilities is also important and helps you to prioritise situations as necessary.”

Joshua also spoke warmly about the impact Crossley Heath had on him during his time at school, particularly the support of former Head of Sixth Form, Mr Donlan:

“Mr Donlan as Head of Sixth Form instilled a great work ethic and respect into me which is something that I still rely on today. He helped me a great deal in running events with him such as Sports Day and providing mentorship throughout tough periods in Sixth Form.”

Joshua’s achievements are a fantastic example of where dedication, resilience and passion can lead, and we are delighted to see one of our alumni representing both Halifax and Crossley Heath on an international stage.

Congratulations, Joshua. We look forward to following your continued success!
