      Published 22/08/25

As the latest instalment in our series of posts sharing the stories of former students, we’re proud to share the story of Noel Broome, a former pupil of Heath Grammar School (1943–1951) whose journey from Halifax to the world stage is nothing short of inspiring.

Despite early setbacks at school, Noel’s passion for music flourished, leading him to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music before embarking on a distinguished orchestral career. He performed with the Hallé Orchestra under Sir John Barbirolli and later joined the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, playing alongside icons including Maria Callas, Yehudi Menuhin, and Paul Tortelier. He even performed for the Royal Family and physicist Stephen Hawking.

Noel went on to become a founding member of the Northern (now Royal) Sinfonia, while also dedicating himself to chamber music, teaching, and writing about music – passions he continues to this day.

From Heath Grammar School to international concert halls, Noel’s story is a true testament to resilience, talent, and the lifelong power of music!
